Dashboard Warning Lights

Dashboard Warning Lights

Cars and trucks are getting smarter every year. However, that doesn't always mean their warning lights are easier to understand. Here are some of the most common symbols and what they could mean.

Check Engine Light. This is one of the most dreaded warning lights. When you see it, it could mean something as simple as a loose gas cap or something more serious, like a faulty catalytic converter. Have your car checked by a mechanic to diagnose the problem.

Battery Alert. When you see an icon of a car battery, this means there is a problem with the charging system. Check the battery terminals, the condition of the battery, and even the alternator belt.

Coolant Temp. If the engine temperature has exceeded its normal limits, you will see this light. Check the radiator cap, fan operation, coolant level, and look for coolant leaks.

Oil Pressure Warning. This light usually appears whenever you start your car. However, if it stays on, it could indicate a loss of oil pressure. Get your engine oil checked as soon as possible.

Tire Pressure Warning. When you see this light, it means one or more of your tires have a low pressure level. There could also be a sensor malfunction. Refill your tires with air, as needed.

ABS. This symbol indicates there may be a problem with the anti-lock brake system in your vehicle. Have your vehicle inspected at a dealership for problems with the brakes.

Traction Control or ESP. This light will turn on when your traction control system activates, usually when there are slippery driving conditions.

Lamp Out. If one of your exterior lights is not working properly, this warning light will turn on.

Washer Fluid. This light indicates your washer fluid is low or has run out completely. Refill the reservoir.

Airbag Fault. If this light stays on after starting your car, there may be a problem with the air bag system. Have your car inspected as soon as possible.
