Torque to Yield Bolts

A Torque-to-Yield fastener from Berger Chevrolet is mounting hardware in the form of a fastener which is torqued beyond the state of elasticity and therefore undergoes plastic deformation, causing it to become permanently elongated.

In order to reinstall the caliper bracket on most newer General Motors vehicles, you have to have a torque angle gauge and two new caliper bracket bolts. The bolts are Torque-to-Yield (TTY) fasteners that stretch. TTY bolts are used on certain makes and models for brake caliper and caliper brackets. Because TTY bolts are designed to stretch, reusing them can cause improper or uneven torque and clamping force. Stretched bolts can damage engine threads and can break if retorqued. TYY bolts are not reusable. Plus, the benefits of replacing TTY bolts absolutely outweighs the cost.

Brake calipers are essential to your vehicle's braking system as brake calipers control your vehicle's ability to stop. The brake calipers squeeze the brake pads against the surface of the brake rotor in order to stop your vehicle. Replacing your TTY bolts in caliper replacement is essential for the safety of you, your vehicle and its passengers. Keeping you and your passengers safe while driving is our number one priority at Berger Chevrolet Service Department. Replacing TTY on caliper replacement helps ensure that your vehicle's systems are working properly.

Think of an externally threaded fastener (bolt, screw or stud) as a spring. As a Torque (T) or Torque Plus Angle (TA) tightening specification is applied, the spring (externally threaded fastener) is stretched. With a Torque (T) or Torque Plus Angle (TA) tightening specification, the spring returns to its original length (elastically stretched) when loosened. In the case of a Torque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY) tightening specification, the spring is overstretched (plastically deformed) and does not return to its original length. For this reason, the Torque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY) tightening specification requires the externally threaded fastener to always be replaced.

In the Service Information, the following warning will be shown when a Torque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY) specification fastener is used:

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with torque-to-yield or single use fasteners. Install a NEW torque-to-yield or single use fastener when installing this component. Failure to replace the torque-to-yield or single use fastener could cause damage to the vehicle or component.
