BERGER IN THE COMMUNITY: NEW GROWTH PROJECT

Did you know that 81% of individuals with an intellectual developmental disability are unemployed? This can lead to a lack of community, isolation, and even depression. New Growth Project understands that individuals with cognitive differences may need additional support in the workplace. With the help of our West Michigan community, New Growth Project cultivates job opportunities on their 20-acre farm for those who may otherwise struggle to find fulfilling employment.

Jobs naturally provide an opportunity to work alongside others. New Growth Project gives each worker an opportunity to connect with their peers and people from the community. They are also taught new skills which allow them to help grow vegetables, package products and sell them in New Growth Project’s Farmer’s Market. 

So what are the benefits of being in a farm setting? There are a countless number of jobs on a farm. New Growth Project’s coaching/peer mentoring program meets each individual at their current skill level and helps to foster new skills and build confidence. With this individualized approach, each worker can be placed in a job where they can experience immediate success. Working on a farm also provides agriculture therapy or “agri-therapy” for the employees! 

We recently had the opportunity to visit New Growth Project with our friends at Fox 17 Morning Mix to learn more about their mission. Offering inclusive job opportunities to individuals with developmental disabilities would not be possible without the help of volunteers and donors. 

By volunteering or donating, you are not only helping provide inclusive jobs, but you’re also helping provide sustainable chemical-free produce in the West Michigan community. It has an immediate impact on providing inclusive job opportunities and it can better equip you to engage with people with developmental disabilities while teaching you the best chemical-free farming practices. Work in the fields, greenhouse, production barn, and the Farmer’s Market all play a huge role in keeping this farm up and thriving!
