EARTH DAY: HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
As a Certified Green Dealer, Earth Day is a year-round holiday for us! From picking-up trash at our local parks, to volunteering at local community gardens, to implementing reusable water bottle stations in each of our buildings, we are always looking for new ways to lessen our ecological footprint and do our part in helping the planet. Obviously, we aren’t perfect, but it isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being conscious and putting in an extra effort – which brings us to this years Earth Day Theme: “Invest in our Planet.” Whether you are investing your time, your energy, your effort, or your resources, putting in the extra effort to be earth conscious will contribute positively to the place we call home. Not sure how you can contribute? We thought of a few earth-friendly ideas for you!
1. Pick-up Trash in the Community
Whether you live in Grand Rapids, Wyoming, Walker, Kentwood, or anywhere in West Michigan for that matter, picking up trash within our community plays a big role in helping the planet. If you know of a place in our community that could use a good cleaning, organize a trash clean-up with friends! We strongly suggest wearing gloves and bringing extra garbage bags.
2. Volunteer at A Local Park
Don’t want to organize the trash clean-up yourself? No problem! There are plenty of opportunities to lend a helping hand at your local park’s organization – Kent County Parks, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, and Ottawa County Parks are just a few you could get involved with. They offer a variety of opportunities to help the environment such as Park Clean-Up’s, Tree Planting, Invasive Species Removal, and more!
3. Eat Plant Based
Eating a plant-based diet is one of the most efficient ways to help the environment. Meat/Dairy consumption is one of the largest contributors to green house gases and overuse of water. Why? To keep animals alive for dairy/meat consumption, we must feed/hydrate them almost 30 times the amount it takes to feed/hydrate a human being. Eating plant based allows us to conserve these resources while keeping animals alive and free. Even lessoning your meat/dairy consumption could make a huge impact on our planet.
4. Use Reusable Grocery Bags and Water Bottles
By lessening your plastic use, you are helping to reduce pollution and save space in your local landfill. Reusable grocery bags and water bottles are a couple of our favorite ways to be earth-conscious.
5. Support Sustainable Businesses
Supporting local, sustainable businesses is another way to be environmentally conscious! One of our favorite sustainable businesses is Public Thread, a local upcycled retail store, or Proprietary GR, a bulk foods store. As you can see, there are lots of ways to “invest in our planet.” Let’s make this place we all share change for the better, together! Small changes can make a ripple effect. What will you do to change the world?
