TAKE A CHEVY SUMMER DRIVE

July 20th, 2023 by

Michigan summers are for making memories. From relaxing beaches to scenic national parks to buzzing city life, the great state of Michigan has a little bit of something for everyone. And there is no better way to explore the Great Lakes State than in a Berger Chevrolet vehicle because a Chevy is what brings us together. Whether you are seeking the thrill of adventure or hoping for a bit of relaxation, let a Chevy be your transportation as you create new memories this summer.

Luckily for us, our Chevy dealership is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where there are plenty of summer activities to keep you busy throughout the season. If you are from the West Michigan area or want to visit, here are some reasons to spend time in Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids Activities

Grand Rapids is a city that has so much to offer, especially when the weather is nice! On your drive to Downtown, stop by Uptown to window shop down Wealthy Street or Cherry Street, each filled with unique shopping options. From clothing boutiques to local bookstores to plant shops, there is sure to be something that will catch your eye as you pass by. Once you are downtown Grand Rapids, the shopping continues! Peruse through several vintage and secondhand stores or local and family-owned shops as you enjoy the downtown streets.

Enjoy the outdoors by visiting the impressive variety of animals at John Ball Zoo or spend an evening enjoying America’s favorite pastime with the West Michigan Whitecaps. Take a walk or a drive through Heritage Hill to view the historic homes of Grand Rapids. And don’t forget to visit Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, recently named the Top Sculpture Park in the United States by USA Today!

Escape the summer heat with the arts and culture that Grand Rapids has to offer. Start by admiring the mobiles of Alexander Calder at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The GRAM’s extensive collection includes many classic artists, as well as contemporary and emerging artists. Head to their website to learn more about their seasonal exhibitions, too!

Not an art junky? Not a problem. History buffs can tour through the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. The 38th President of the United States, Gerald R. Ford was raised in Grand Rapids giving our city its own presidential history. The Gerald R. Ford Museum captures that history through highlighting the life of the President and his wife, Betty Ford.

Have a younger crowd or a mix of ages? Spend the day at the Grand Rapids Public Museum or at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. The Grand Rapids Public Museum is perfect for all ages and with its rotating exhibitions there is sure to be something to pique your interest. The Grand Rapids Children’s Museum is the perfect outing for the kids including interactive exhibits and engaging play areas.

Explore Michigan

The best part of Grand Rapids is how conveniently located it is within West Michigan. Pack up your Chevy Blazer, Silverado, Trailblazer, or whatever you may have for a short drive in any direction and you are sure to run into an inland lake, or even the coveted Lake Michigan. With Holland and Saugatuck to the southwest and Grand Haven and Muskegon to the northwest, there are ample lake fronts to choose from. Looking to bring your furry friend on your beach day adventure? Visit Kirk Park in West Olive, Michigan, only a 50 minute drive west from Grand Rapids, for an off-leash dog beach.

Really buckle in with a road trip up a little further north with the perfect getaway in Traverse City, Michigan, where you can embrace nature, city life, and good food. You can walk the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore or take a stroll through the quaint shops of downtown. Go cherry picking in the “Cherry Capital of the World” or spend the day visiting the vineyards of Leelanau and Old Mission peninsula tasting some of the country’s best wines.

Venture even farther north to take the ferry to Mackinac Island. Leave your Chevy Trax behind, though, this historic island in Michigan is vehicle free! Transport back in time with the island’s two historic military forts and some of Michigan’s oldest buildings. By exploring the museums and witnessing the reenactments, you will get a taste of what it was like to live on Mackinac Island in the 19th century. Take in the island’s beauty by taking the biking paths along the perimeter. Not up for a bike ride? What Mackinac Island lacks in vehicles they make up for in horses! Hop on a horse drawn carriage ride to navigate through downtown or to take you up the hill to the Grand Hotel, a national historic landmark that you can stay at or stop by for a delicious meal and great view on the iconic porch. No matter how you decide to spend your time on Mackinac Island, an absolute must is to try the Mackinac Island Fudge. Follow the mouth watering smells of chocolate to either Ryba’s Fudge Shops, Murdicks Fudge, Joann’s Fudge, or our personal favorite… all three!

If you are really seeking to lose yourself in the beauty of nature this summer, then Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is the place for you. Pack up your camping gear into your Chevy Equinox and cross the five mile long Mackinac Bridge to the U.P. The U.P. has no shortage of breathtaking views and interesting history. Feel like you are at the top of the world by visiting Michigan’s largest state park, the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, or venture to the edge of the U.P. by visiting the Keweenaw Peninsula. Stand in awe of the magnificent Tahquamenon Falls or go chasing more waterfalls at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
