THINGS TO DO THIS SPRING IN GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN

April 7th, 2025 by

Spring has arrived in Grand Rapids, Michigan! As the days get longer and the weather warms up, the city comes to life in a whole new way. While winter in the city has its own perks, the new season offers exciting new activities for visitors and locals alike. Whether you’re drawn to outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, exploring the city’s cuisine offerings, or maybe have been thinking of a new vehicle from Berger Chevrolet to take on the new season, Grand Rapids has something to offer everyone. Here are some of the things the Berger team is looking forward to the most for this spring season.

The Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

Known worldwide for its tasteful blending of both nature and art, the Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a must-visit destination this season. Spring is a time of renewal and new beginnings, which is perfectly showcased at the Meijer Gardens. As you stroll through the grounds, you will be able to witness nature coming back to life through the various flowers and plants within the grounds.

The park offers a variety of educational programs for those curious to learn more about the gardens and nature in general. If these classes do not pique your interest, the Frederick Meijer Gardens also invite visitors to simply stroll the grounds and appreciate the nature and sculptures within in their own way.

If the promise of nature and sculptures were not enough to convince you, from now until April 30th the largest temporary butterfly exhibition in the US is also taking place at the Frederick Meijer Gardens. Now is the time to see over 60 species of butterflies and moths in one location. The Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is open Mondays, Wednesday-Saturday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sundays 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Tuesdays 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

A Stroll Along the River

Moving back into the heart of Grand Rapids, the spring can be a perfect time to enjoy a scenic stroll along the Grand River. Take a leisurely walk or bike ride along the Grand River’s pathways. As the weather warms up, this area becomes a center of outdoor activity, with people enjoying the riverbanks, picnic areas, and open green spaces. The Grand River is the perfect place to unwind, relax, and soak in the sights and sounds of spring.

John Ball Zoo

Looking for an activity for the whole family? The John Ball Zoo has you covered. A great place to spend a day enjoying both animals and nature, the zoo is home to a wide variety of species from all over the world. Spring can be an especially exciting time to visit the zoo, as the animals are becoming more active as the weather warms up and the slowness of winter fades. Adults can enjoy seeing and learning about the different animals and exhibits, while children can enjoy the various play areas and interactive exhibits throughout the zoo.

While the zoo makes for the perfect day trip, they are currently open to nighttime guests for the John Ball Zoo Grand Rapids Lantern Festival. Taking place now until June 15th, the light festival features handcrafted Asian lantern displays scattered throughout the exhibits, giving visitors a uniquely illuminated experience blending wildlife and Asian culture. You can explore this unique experience on Wednesdays – Sundays, 7:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.
